on this twenty-fifth anniversary of the sound and the calling, the fury and the coming, the fall and the redemption, the named and the EPONYMOUS—what is there left to say? more acrostic than cosmic. more sinew than news. critics didn't understand it—anyone who thought they did was five fools' fool.
five guys playing jazz changed the world with this record. they sat down and for one hour on a chilling sunny summertime evening, the seven minds and fourteen hands and twelve tones and five tunes were named smirking, and they tore at their hair, bit hard and threw caution to the wind. it's said people are born free and grow into their chains. artists do just the opposite. . .
i want you to think back to where you were when this record dropped outta the sky. brick recordstore? river fishing? dancing with your true love? i myself was just thinking, just tapping out the years between then and then. i remember chuckling to myself as i heard the tragedy and crying through the comedy. i remember jorge's wit and cp's rhyme and jackson's dexterity and stuart's algo-rhythms and q's massive pockets and aaron's cool and miles' obtuse. . .
what do you remember? listen and recall.
